While Disneyland in Anaheim, California is home to many beloved shows, rides and attractions, there are very few landmarks within the original theme park, probably outside the castle at the end of the main entrance as well as Nostalgia Main Street USA. However, there is one focal point within Disneyland that most people can see at any convenient place within the park, and that is the summit of the Matterhorn.
Matterhorn Mountain, while not the original Disneyland attraction of 1955, is a beloved feature of many park-goers, as its beauty as well as its deep history within Disneyland make this attraction an important part of Disneyland’s overall charm. This steel roller coaster is meant to mimic the real-life Matterhorn Mountains in the Alps, and is home to the legendary hideous snowman. So why is it closed to guests?
For those who are not fond of Disneyland travelers, you would be surprised to know that the Matterhorn Bobsleds, a key feature of Disneyland, are not always open. In fact, the attraction was closed for several months during the year due to continuous repairs, given the age of the attraction, first opened in 1959. Now, with the loss of major infrastructure, it is unclear when Dear Matterhorn will reopen it.
The repair of the matterhorn is underway
Since its official reopening last month, Disneyland has continued to close the Matterhorn Mountains, which are reportedly falling off the mountain and onto riding tracks, due to external decay. Last month, on the Disneyland website, the park’s calendar told fans of the attraction that Matterhorn would likely remain closed until July 1, 2021. However, can it really take longer to repair this ride?
While Matterhorn bobsleds typically undergo seasonal repairs each year, the attraction had an extensive refurbishment process from 2014 to 2015, giving the ride new and improved visual effects as well as an entirely animatronic hideous snowman. These additions did not necessarily improve overall safety or ease of ride when welcomed by Disneyland lovers.
The Matterhorn is often considered by many theme park goers as the most turbulent ride in existence, given the age of attraction and cemented rail. Many assumed that the ride could be recreated directly from the ground, similar to the Big Thunder Mountain Railroad, which underwent an extensive refurbishment as well as a new tracking process a few years ago. However, this may not be possible.

David Erickson, a YouTuber who makes several Disneyland videos every year, said the following about the attraction on his channel: “She is getting older and getting older. I have heard from some people that there is decay on the interior. . . The necessary repairs are extensive. ”
Erikson then discussed the possibility of rebuilding the attraction from the ground up, stating that “even if they wanted to, they could not,” he said. To build the same 1/100 scale of the original Matterhorn Mountains today, the footprint of the structure would have to be much larger than that built in 1959. This would mean closing other attractions nearby, such as Alice in Wonderland to make the ride place.
While this would certainly be time-consuming, perhaps the safest and most prudent decision would be to recreate the Matterhorn from the ground up, giving riders an easier and more enjoyable time at the attraction as well as months of repairs for Disney’s Imagineers Will limit it. Who knows? It is rumored that Disney is planning a feature film in the spirit of Matterhorn. . . Maybe they can time their opening together?
