Prince Philip died on April 9, 2021. He was ninety-nine years old at the time of his death, and was just a few months away from his 100th birthday. Philip married into the royal family in 1947, when he married Princess Elizabeth several years before taking the throne as queen. The death of Prince Philip was a very reminder that the royal couple is very elderly. Queen Elizabeth II is currently ninety herself.
With the recent departure of Prince Harry and Meghan Markle from official royal duties, the Royals have been in the news recently. Everyone’s eyes were on Harry and his father as Harry returned to England for Prince Philip’s funeral, with many wondering where the thirty-six-year-old man is in relation to his line of succession.
The short answer is, Harry was born into a royal family in England, so technically he can still be king. However, he now has some other people in front of him, who could have been offered a job. Here is a glimpse into the royal family tree and the current line of succession.
Queen Elizabeth II
Elizabeth became Queen of England on 6 February 1952. She is the longest reigning woman in British history. Queen Elizabeth II has attempted to leave a slightly different legacy than her predecessors and has changed her reign to make it more modern and susceptible to the masses.
Despite being born a royal, Elizabeth was never initially to hold the throne. When his grandfather died in 1936, his elder son took over the throne. King Edward VIII did not stay there long. She was in love with an American socialite who had already ended two unsuccessful marriages. King Edward VIII renounced to marry Wallis Simpson.
In 1937, Elizabeth’s father was crowned King George VI, and Elizabeth was placed in a straight line of succession.
Princess Elizabeth married Philip Mountbatten, a distant cousin on her family tree, for five years before taking the throne. They had four children: Charles, Anne, Andrew and Edward. In 1969, Charles was officially announced as the heir to the throne when Elizabeth named him Prince of Wales.
Charles, Prince of Wales
Charles is the first of Elizabeth and Philip’s children. Born on November 14, 1948, he is currently the direct heir to the throne when the queen finally passes. He was appointed Prince of Wales when he was just nine years old. Charles attended the University of Cambridge where he studied archeology, anthropology and history. He was the first royal successor to do so.
Charles served a six-month stint with the Royal Air Force before signing on to the Royal Navy, where he served in HMS Norfolk. She married Diana Spencer in 1981 and had two children: William and Harry. Their marriage, however, was not an easy one and the pair split in 1992. They officially divorced in 1996.
During their marriage, it is believed that Charles rejuvenated his former relationship with Camilla Parker Bowles, effectively betraying Diana. This is believed to be a factor in Charles’s breakdown of his relationship with his wife. In 1997, Diana died in a car accident.
Prince Charles married Camilla Parker Balls in 2005. The couple concentrated their time together on philanthropic works.
Prince William, Duke of Cambridge
Prince William was born in 1982, one year after Charles and Diana’s marriage was added to the family tree. The first of his two children, William, is the second heir to the throne directly after his father. Due to the very public nature of his parents’ divorce, William was in the news from an early age.
When his parents divorced, the media in England focused his attention on William and his brother Harry, and William reportedly struggled with attention. While growing up, he attended St Andrews University in Scotland and graduated in 2005 with a degree in Geography. Upon graduation, William entered active military service following in his father’s footsteps.
He remained in active military service until 2013. He announced that he was leaving the military to concentrate on his royal duties.
On April 29, 2011, William married his college girlfriend Kate Middleton. The couple have added three children to the royal family tree: George, Charlotte and Louis.
Prince George of Cambridge
As the first child of William and Kate, George is third to the throne. George was born on July 22, 2013, in the same hospital as his father. His birth was a special one and marked the first time since the reign of Queen Victoria that three generations of direct heirs are alive at the same time.
George is currently seven years old and is attending the prestigious Thomas Battersea School in London, England.
