Leylah Annie Fernandez is a Canadian professional tennis player. She won her first WTA Tour singles title at the 2021 Monterrey Open.

She has a career-high singles ranking of world No. 66, achieved on 14 June 2021. She achieved her career-high doubles ranking of world No. 120 on 21 June 2021.

Her Mother is Irene Exevea.

Her father Jorge Fernandez is a former soccer player of Ecuadorian origins and her mother Irene Exevea is a Canadian of Filipino origins. 

Leylah was born on the 6th of September 2002 in Montreal. She is just a couple of days away from celebrating her 19th birthday. Her talents go beyond tennis as she is fluent in three languages, English, French, and Spanish. 

In her career so far, she has managed to win a WTA title and a Challenger Trophy. In 2019, she won the French Open juniors title. She made her Grand Slam debut during the Australian Open 2020.

Coach:

During her last press conference, the young Canadian explained that that man is her fitness coach while her father Jorge is home.

Leylah revealed:

“The gentleman that’s in the box beside my mom is not my father. He’s my fitness coach. My dad is actually back home with my younger sister. He’s been calling every day, telling me what to do, so it’s been great.

Son:

Raonic, former world no. 3 and 2016 Wimbledon finalist of Serbian descent, was born in SFR Yugoslavia (now Podgorica, Montenegro) in 1990 and came to Canada with his engineer parents as a four-year-old.

Mississauga-born Andreescu’s parents arrived from Romania “with one bag and a frying pan” in 1994 as well. Vernon, British Columbia-born Pospisil’s parents are refugees from Czechoslovakia via Austria while Shapovalov’s parents came from the former Soviet Union via Israel.
