Google I / O – the annual developer-focused event – saw a variety of announcements, but kept a lot in the locker. What was missing here.
Google I / O was a bit strange this year. We interacted with Paper Airplanes, an entire section dedicated to Google Docs, which helps you avoid gender-related terms, a more sensitive Google Photos app, and a full section on quantum computing.
When we thought Google was having a big joke with us with the least consumer-friendly I / O keynote ever, the company dropped Android 12 and the biggest news of the day; That it was teaming up with Samsung and Fitbit to rival the last Apple Watch (or watchOS).
However, compared to expectations, a lot was still missing from the event, where we have been expecting a little bit of hardware to be new for years and there was none this year. So, let’s see what we are still waiting for from Google in 2021.
Pixel Buds A-Series Earbuds
Google has already confirmed that these are coming – at least by mistake. New versions of Pixel Buds were revealed by marketing materials earlier in May and were set to appear in I / O. Unfortunately, Google kept the incident entirely about the software. We are not sure what will differentiate the Pixel Buds A-Series from the current model, but we do know that they will benefit from the Fast Pair Bluetooth technology that enables a faster connection.
Well, even though it appears that the Pixel 5a will only be US-launched, we half expected Google to unveil it at some point during Google I / O. But this did not happen. We are still hoping that it will eventually introduce 5G technology and a mid-range Qualcomm chip when it arrives. The 4a was launched at the end of last year, so it’s probably not surprising that Google is still rocking it.
The possibility of this Pixel 6 coming on I / O was even less as Google usually unveils its flagship phone in October. However, it was still absent and added to the list of things we are expecting from Google later this year. With a redesigned and running Android 12, it will probably be one of the best Android phones.
Silence from stadia
2021 did not go well for Stadia fans. Google abandoned first-party games and loads of top executives and developers jumped ship. Google I / O would have been a good time to tell everyone what it is working to restore confidence that Stadia has a future. Alas, nothing.
Google GS100 Smartphone Chip
The rumor is that the Pixel 6 will be powered by the all-new Google-made SoC, similar to the A-Series Apple uses or Samsung’s Exynos chips. The rumored chip – codenamed Whitechapel – would be a good move for Google’s hardware, which currently relies on Qualcomm chips. However there was no indication of this on I / O.
Nest to Nowt
There is nothing to add here. There was nothing related to Google’s smart home brand Nest.
Okay, this has been rumored for real years, but now it is more likely than ever. Google revealed the blueprint with the new Wear OS / Tizen / Fitbit OS operating system, but does not yet have its own branded Pixel Watch hardware.
