Opinion: The Mobile World Congress should be canceled in person next month. The risks outweigh the rewards and the big tech companies shun it. The time has come to focus on GSMA.
So, Samsung and Lenovo are out. Google (hence Android) is not going. Intel, Microsoft, Facebook, BT, Nokia and Sony say no. Qualcomm is not traveling either. All have given priority to the safety of their employees. Many will give virtual presentations instead. Nevertheless, as it stands, the individual part of the Mobile World Congress is still moving into Barcelona from 28 June.
Why? There is clearly no need to hold this conference in person this year. This is the extent of irresponsibility and GSMA should cancel the individual portion of the event. Just like last year when it insisted that all appropriate precautions were being taken to deal with the emerging crisis. Eventually it was forced to cancel as everyone and their dog retreated. This probably saved lives. You suspect that the 2021 moratorium is where it is going too if only two big-name attendees, Huawei and ZTE, changed their stance by standing up.
In Britain we are finally seeing the fruits of a tough lockdown and a successful vaccine roll-out that has finally allowed us to see and soon embrace our friends and family. We will be able to sit in a pub and have a pint again from next week. We will be able to enjoy the euro together this summer. In mainland Europe, vaccination efforts are gaining momentum and they are also seeing a lot of progress.
Why put all that at risk by encouraging people to travel across national borders and gather for an indoor event, also a possible super-spreader shindig, as things look? Right now, potential new variants are considered more of a threat than simple case numbers. It is feared that vaccine-resistant variants may undo the progress of the difficult conflict. It may take weeks for attendees to fully take root in their home countries.
look at Reliable reviews It is our passion to bring you the latest technology news, reviews and features; We live and breathe it. But we value Actually Live and breathe a little more. This is more important than looking at a mobile phone that the company is going to send us for review. It is more important than being present for a press conference that is being streamed live.
MWC is important to many people; Short sellers in particular are looking for a break for their innovations. We have stumbled across many of them over the years, within the least-spheres of the Barcelona Conference area. We feel bad for those who might miss that window of opportunity to get their product in front of the right people if the program does not progress this year.
But it’s not really an Olympic sport, is it? Having a completely virtual MWC event this summer rather than an in-person showcase is not going to leave a big empty space in the history books where athletes were denied the shot they had in their prime that they had spent their entire lives Had trained for . Wouldn’t it be the case that “Samsung had created this amazing innovation that would have changed the world if only the people at MWC also saw it”?
It is a very privileged position that we lay our hands on the best phones and new gadgets and provide you with our first impressions, which we do not take lightly. But perspective is everything here.
with honesty? It is not felt that the coverage of Tech Press collectively suffered a significant loss from the canceled MWC last year, just as it had not happened for CES in January nor for so many in-person events. .
Sure, we may have missed a few scoops from the less-publicized companies we met on the floor. We may have missed some relationship building. It may take a little longer to receive the products after the announcements. However, most companies have adjusted their strategy to ensure that we have everything we need to work. Leading people have not missed a beat.
As a result, we are not struggling with others to feel the phone, in light which makes it very difficult to achieve good photography and video and we can take more than five or six minutes which we usually have Believe in those early narrative-shaping impressions we get to make sure we can deliver the message.
Every precaution… except main
See, GSMA PR has become aggressive and has clarified that it is Taking every precaution To ensure a safe environment for exhibitors and attendees. To go to the event you will need a negative test, attendees will have to make daily health announcements, and you can have the test done before coming home.
The venue is ‘no touch’, the organizers have improved ventilation and are adding more exits and entrances. They are doing all they can and it is still not enough. But nothing will happen at this time. GSMA cannot control it right now, but it can control whether it puts people at unnecessary risk by hosting an in-person event that people feel compelled to. The new normal should not be like the old normal.
The in-person celebration should be canceled as soon as possible. Everyone knows this. We love Barcelona, but can live for another year without the Mobile World Congress. Do the right thing, GSMA, and hopefully we can expect to see you again in 2022.
