During Google I / O, the company announced some major improvements to the Google Photos app, including making the memory feature slightly more sensitive.
New features include the ability to delete a picture from memory, if for some reason it is painful to look back, rename the memory or remove it altogether from the annual reminder.
Google says the feature is designed to ensure that memories are things you really want to be reminded of. Whether it is a break up, loss or a difficult time in your life, you will not want to miss it.
Google also says that it has heard from the transgender community that members do not want to see images of themselves that can bring back painful memories, so it is working with GLAAD to ensure this feature. Google says new controls will be introduced to address this.
During the I / O Google also revealed that memories will appear when you are scrolling through the photo grid, which should break things up a bit. For example, you will see ‘Best of the month’ in the feed.
As the keynote speaker, Google announced new types of memories for more diverse religious ceremonies such as Diwali, Lunar New Year and Hanukkah, while some machine learning techniques are techniques that will pick up familiar elements of photos, such as on the go. The backpack you wore around the world (apparently in earlier times), for example.
Another new feature includes the time you take multiple versions of the same photo to try and correct it. Using computational photography, Google will take small elements of movement between those photos to create a “cinematic moment”.
In blog post Google states: “The best thing is that cinematic moments can be created with any pair of nearly identical images – whether they are captured on the latest smartphone or scanned from an old photo album.”
Elsewhere, Google announced a new locked folder where you can harbor photos that you won’t show while scrolling through your device at the company.
Google says that new features in the Google Photos app will begin today, along with Android 12 coming later this year.
