Sony has revealed that it has more than 25 first-party PS5 exclusives from the PlayStation Studios’ portfolio of creators.
In an interview with Wired, Hermann Hulst, boss of PlayStation Studios, says the bumper crop of titles for the new console is already in development, six months after the sale of the next generation machine.
In even better news, more than half of the 25 will be new IPs, not a sequel or expansion of existing franchisees. It doesn’t look like they’ll all be AAA big-hitters, but there will be many titles ranging from small indie-style games to blockbusters.
A lot of these games are coming from the studio, a relationship with Sony and not directly from the studio that owns it outright. It has a tendency to brand such studios as first-parties.
“There is an incredible amount of diversity arising from different regions,” Halst said. “Large, small, different styles.”
This can be a serious incentive for gamers who enjoyed life on the PS4 or suffer particular jealousy when gaming on Xbox One. We look forward to seeing a somewhat loaded list as of now we only know about four confirmed first-party upcoming PS5 games. They are: God of War: Ragnarok, Gran Turismo 7, Horizon Forbidden West and Ratchet and Clank: Rift Apart. All of which are likely to sit among the frontrunners for the best PS5 games.
There are some already announced games that are probably part of the 25 Plus games currently in production, including the new independent-but-Sony-aligned studio Heaven Games, which will work on the PS5-exclusive. The studio hit the ground running with Sony’s investment after leaving its role to oversee wasted first-party efforts at Google Stadia by founder Jade Raymond.
Back in March, he said: “Together, we want to make games that are a haven for players, and we want to build a studio that is a haven for developers. So, while we have many more to announce today The details are not there, I want the PlayStation community to know that Haven Studios is already working on an undeclared IP. We can’t wait to show you more! “
